Alan R. Schaeffer, M.D
I grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, and graduated from Parkway North High School. I attended college at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and graduated with a B.A. in Biology and an M.D. Degree in May 1987. After an Internship at St. Luke’s Hospital in St. Louis and a Residency at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans (where I met my wife), we moved to Houston for a Fellowship in Cornea and External Diseases at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center.
In 1992 we moved to Memphis. After being associated with other Ophthalmologists in Memphis, in 2001 I opened my own practice in Southaven, Mississippi. I am a Board Certified Ophthalmologist specializing in diseases of the cornea, cataract surgery, and laser eye surgery. Recently, I opened a surgery suite to perform cataract and laser surgery, and another office in Olive Branch, Mississippi.
I’ve been an active member of the local medical community. I’m a Clinical Assistant Professor in the University of Tennessee Department of Ophthalmology in Memphis. I was Medical Director of the Mid South Eye Bank for thirteen years. I’ve also been Program Chairman and President (at different times) of the Memphis Society of Ophthalmology, and I’ve been a Board Member and Membership Chairman of the Tennessee Society of Ophthalmology.
If I have any spare time I like to travel with my family, and take an occasional ski trip. The links at the top of the page will get you to other web pages where you can meet the other doctors in my offices.
